2. IWF Essay Contest

Description: The Independent Women’s Forum (IWF) is proud to announce its first annual student essay contest! The essay contest is open to undergraduate women and offers a first prize of $5,000!

The following are the competition rules the contest. Deadline for applications is December 1, 2005.

Applicants must be full-time, female students of any age enrolled as undergraduates in any college or university during the 2005-2006 school year.

Applicants must submit a completed entry form.

Applicants must submit a typed, double-spaced essay of no longer than 750 words that address the following topic:

Please discuss your experience on college campus as an independent woman. How has your college or university helped or hindered your intellectual and personal growth? Please describe what you think it means to be an independent woman in the year 2005.

Applicant’s name must appear in the top right-hand corner of each page of the submission. All pages must be numbered.

Entry forms must be post marked by December 1, 2005.

The decision of the judges is final. IWF reserves the right not to award a prize.

3. IREF 2005 Essay Contest

The IREF 2005 Essay Contest on Taxation and Justice. Cash awards totaling 20,000 Euros. The essay should address notions of fairness and equality in the tax structures. Eligible candidates were born in 1970 or later, and have original, unpublished papers. No restriction is set on style, and the essay can be written in English or French. The length should be between 7,000 and 10,000 words (longer if in French). The first prize essay will receive 10,000 Euros. Papers should be sent before December 15th 2005.

With the joint success of the Agenda Writing Programme and the Agenda Website ( www.agenda.org.za ) . Agenda have decided to start the first annual Online Writing Programme.
Agenda believe that developing women’s ability to write is essential to enabling women to express their needs, wants and demands effectively and to influence the development of society. The creation and dissemination of information about gender is essential for both men and women to challenge the gender status quo. The Writing Programme has two primary objectives: to
develop the writing skills of women from Africa and to contribute to the development of gender-informed writers producing gender-informed media.

The Programme will begin in late November and will run through to May next year. Twelve writers will be selected from various African countries to write about a gendered topic, in a language they choose. All pieces will be published onto the Agenda website, and regular meetings will be taking place through the Agenda website’s community section. In this way, Agenda hopes to increase the publication of African languages online.

Please note: all applicants must be fluent in written English as they will be communicating with the Agenda Writing Programme Coordinator on a regular basis. The Programme costs $55. This cost includes a one year subscription to the Agenda Feminist Journal and all materials for the course. Only selected applicants will be required to pay this fee.

How to Apply
The applicants must have regular access to a computer, email and the internet as the programme will take place online. Writers must choose a mentor who will be able to meet with the writer on a
regular basis to develop the piece. This mentor will also be required to edit and proofread the article before publication. The mentors name and contact details must be included in the application.
Applicants must write a letter of motivation, in English, explaining the following:
– The topic of your article
– The style you want to write in, ie: academic, creative, journalistic, prose ect.
– The language you wish to write in
– Your geographical location
– The reason you should be chosen for the programme.
